Masters of Color

One big reason I like being in New York is I wander the Metropolitan Museum of Art and just look at anything that hits me. I had a few minutes the other day and they currently have 6 paintings of Hans Hoffman in a temporary display. I walked in and stayed almost an hour. The colors and the way they define space and time are truly magnificent. He was truly one of the greatest masters of color. Here are 2 of my favorites, I tried to get the color balance correct, but to really understand them, you have to see the real thing.

Another all time favorite, Paul Gauguin, is also one of the master colorists, but in an entirely different way. The flattening of the image and the mind-bending contrasts never fail to excite my brain when I see it.
