Sundogs from Manhattan

Sun dog from Manhattan

Nov. 9, 2009 - Sundog from 15th St in Manhattan

It’s a bit off the subject but today I looked out the window and noticed this sun dog. Also known as a parhelion, caused by refraction of light through the clouds Sun dogs are usually associated with cold weather, but it’s very warm today (63°F), with cirrostratus clouds. We are on the northeast side of the hurricane Ida, which is bringing in the tropical air. By Wednesday we will be getting the cold air sucked done from Canada on the opposite side of the circulation. Notice the airplane at 1 o’clock from the sun.

One Response to “Sundogs from Manhattan”

  1. we saw it over the hudson river. there was an unbelievable top rainbow spot that was curved opposite the circle around the sun, as well as a much much longer (1/4 arc) above the top spot, also curved upward. it was insane. thanks for posting!
