Back from Bali

We are on our way back to NYC from Bali, not a victory celebration but a friends wedding. Still it was a nice victory tour!

Bali has a deeply religious base for its Hindu culture. Some books refer to it as the Island of 10,000 temples but this is an understatement. Almost every home has at least a large shrine, if not a temple, and every villiage has 2 or 3 communal temples. They are generally ornnate structures built for the soft volcanic rock which starts out light grey and ages into  black,  moss covered stone quickly. One of the interesting features is that temples are built with the carvings blocked out and when there are enough funds , the carving is completed. This leaves quite a bit of rather minimalist decoration. In fact, I believe modern buildings are actually designed this way with no intention of being carved,  but just a motif.
